The “1st International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method & the 30th Anniversary of the Foundation of Extenics” was held in Beijing, China

2013 is the 30th anniversary of the foundation of original science — Extenics. The “1st International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method” was held in Beijing. From August 16 to 18, more than 120 Extenics experts and scholars from China, America, Britain, Germany, Japan, India, Romania and Australia, etc., including Li Youping, academician of China Academy of Engineering Physics, Gu Jifa, researcher of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Youping professor of Beijing Normal University, gathered in Beijing Xijiao Hotel and exchanged and researched the results of Extenics and innovation methods.

Wu Wenjun, senior academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the winner of top science and technology award, as the honorary president of the international symposium, sent a letter to “congratulate on the holding and success of the International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method!” Academician Wu has spoken highly of Extenics on newspaper since 2004:“this is an original science with both theory and practice and combines foundation and application.... It is very good to have such innovation product in China ... extension engineering has set up a model of innovation.”

Academician Li Youping said in his speech: “in 2004, I had the opportunity to join Wu Wenjun in presiding over the Extenics research and identification of professor Cai Wen, etc. Over the 9 years, Extenics research has witnessed many gratifying progress, so I am quite sure now to restate the comments: ‘professor Cai Wen has established a new science, Extenics, which covers philosophy, mathematics and engineering and is an original science of profound values established by Chinese scientists’. At that time, I also conveyed the opinion of academician Wu Wenjun —‘we should support and protect the independent innovation of Chinese scholars. If you think this subject is reasonable, why not support it?’The year before last, Extenics won the first innovation prize of the “1st Intelligence Scientific and Technological Award of Wu Wenjun’, which is an accurate evaluation of the science.”

Takeshi Yamakawa, Japanese fuzzy mathematics expert, expressed congratulations on the holding of the symposium; Professor Hao Zhifeng, the vice-chancellor of Guangdong University of Technology, made a passionate speech on the holding of the symposium representing Guangdong University of Technology.

With the advancing of science and technology, existing mathematical tools have become impossible to describe and deduct successively emerging complex problems in many areas, which brought a wholly new subject to scientists. Cai Wen, a Chinese scholar and researcher, led an innovation team for three decades aiming at the “No Man’s Land” in world scientific community, researching new theories and new methods and transforming seemingly “insoluble” contradictory problems into “soluble” problems, and founded Extenics, an independent science in international academic community.

According to the introduction of researcher Yang Chunyan, chairman of academic committee of the “1st International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method” and the director of the Institute of Extenics and Innovation Method, Guangdong University of Technology, in 1983, China’sJournal of Scientific Explorationpublished the paper of researcher Cai Wen, chairman of the international symposium and the founder of Extenics, “Extension Set and Incompatible Problems”, which discussed the basic theories and methods of the intelligent management of contradictory problems for utilizing computer to help humans deal with contradictions, which opened a new research direction. Over the past 30 years, a large number of scholars have gathered to research on the basic work of realizing the intelligent processing of contradictions and building the new science — Extenics.

Extenics is the science that resolves contradictory problems by studying the possibility of extensions and the rules and methods of innovation with formalized model.It is the basis of intelligent processing of contradictions and the bridge between natural science and social science. In order to solve contradictions, it has extended mathematics, system theory, logical theory and methodology in six aspects.

At present, the results of Extenics have been successfully applied in many fields and are widely accepted in the academia. Many foreign universities and research institutes in Europe and America have begun to participate in the research and application of Extenics. Since 2012, foreign professors from America, Romania and India, etc., began to participate in “international researchers group of Extenics” of the Institute of Extenics and Innovation Method, Guangdong University of Technology, by three stages to study and research on Extenics.English version monographExtenics: Theory, Method and Applicationhas been published jointly by China’s Science Press and American Education Publishing in this March and widely favored by international research scholars of Extenics as a teaching material.

On the symposium, researcher Cai Wen from China made the report “the Scientific Significance and Future Development of Extenics”, researcher Yang Chunyan made the report “the Innovation Methods of Extenics”, professor Florentin Smarandache from America made the report “the Formula of Multi-dimensional Dependent Functions”, professor Luige Vladareanu from Romania made the report “the Application of Extenics in Robotics”, professor Ramesh Choudhary from India made the report “Use Extenics to Solve Cognitive and Calculation Problems”, and professor Zhao Yanwei from China made the report “the Design Theories and Methods of Extenics”. German professor T.H.J. Vaneker, chairman of European Triz Society, introduced the innovation research of ETRIA meetings over the decade at the meeting. Researcher Gu Jifa expounded on the relationship between intelligence theory and Extenics and thought that the formation and development of the subject system of Extenics are in line with the CADPOM model structure of intelligence. Professor Wang Peizhuang introduced his understanding of Extenics and considered Extenics as the most powerful science to meet our times. The latest research results, covering the research progress of extension theory, the application promotion of extension innovation method and the research of other innovation methods, and a number of Extenics researchers were exchanged by group on the symposium.

This symposium also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the foundation of Extenics. Over the 30 years, Extenics has been fruitful. According to incomplete statistics, by 2012, the number of projects funded by Natural Science Foundation of China to support the research of Extenics has reached 59; China’s Science Press, etc., have successively published 15 monographs of Extenics (including Extenics series), 35 books, textbooks and papers involving the application of Extenics achievements, more than 3000 journal papers on Extenics and more than 900 doctoral or master's dissertations. These papers, monographs and projects have built the theory system of Extenics — extension theory and method system — extension innovation methods. Extenics researchers have also carried out the applied research of Extenics — extension engineering including extension strategy generation, extension data mining, extension design, extension control, extension detecting and management extension engineering, etc., especially active in the applied research in the fields of artificial intelligence and computer where a number of patents and software copyrights have been applied for.

Over the 30 years, the research of Extenics has developed from a person into an international team, from an article into a new subject and from China to the world. This is a subject crossing philosophy, mathematics and engineering. Seeing from the application scope like the information theory, cybernetics and system theory, it is a cross subject with a wide range of applications.

For 30 years, Extenics has gradually spread to all over the world. Scholars from America, India, Germany, Romania, Venezuela and Japan, etc., actively participated in research, formed international scientific community of Extenics, published papers and monographs and carried out applied research of Extenics in each field.

As a result of the symposium, professor Florentin Smarandache from America read out the “Declaration of Extenics” is on behalf of the “1st International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method”.

As scholars from different countries to participate in the research of Extenics is increasing day by day, to widely carry out the international academic exchanges, and it will be decided on the symposium to set up the “Preparatory Committee of the International Society for Extenics and Innovation Method” to prepare for the establishment of the “International Society for Extenics and Innovation Method” in 2015, researcher Cai Wen, the founder of Extenics, acting as the director of the Preparatory Committee, American professor Florentin Smarandache and Romanian professor Luige Vladareanu as vice directors. It is also decided on the symposium to set up the “Preparatory Committee of the International Journal of Extenics” to prepare for the publication of international journal, researcher Cai Wen as the director of the Preparatory Committee, Indian professor Akhilesh Upadhyay, American professor Jeffrey YL Forrest and Romanian professor Adrian Olaru acting as vice directors. It is also decided on the symposium to hold the “2nd International Symposium on Extenics and Innovation Method” in 2015.

During the symposium, the Extension Engineering Specialized Committee, Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, held the 13th work meeting of the Specialized Committee, made organization adjustment of the Specialized Committee, and decided that researcher Yang Chunyan will act as the director, researcher Cai Wen as the honorary director and professor Chen Wenwei as the vice honorary director of the Specialized Committee, while professor Liu Wei acts as the director of the Academic Committee to discuss the future work of the Specialized Committee.

The success of the symposium has played a positive role in promoting the in-depth research and application of Extenics and taken a solid step for Extenics to become more mature and make its way into the world scientific community.
