The Appraisal Opinion
"Extension Theory and its Applications" sums up the representation and processing methods of all kinds of contradictory phenomena since ancient times. After formalization, logicalization and mathematization, it has formed an original knowledge structure of Extenics. Its application forms “the extension engineering method”.
Since 1988, the National Natural Science Foundation of China has supported 6 projects on Extenics.
This project is the combination of more than 20 years’ Extenics theoretical framework and methodology research achievements. It uses formal language to describe matters, affairs and relations. It studies the formal methods to resolve contradictory problems. It turns philosophy rules and logic expressed in natural language into an operable methodology conducted by computers. Up to now, we have yet to see someone doing similar work so thoroughly at home and abroad. We agree that this is an original result worthy of support, encouragement and development.
Base-element theory, extension set theory and the extension logic are the three pillars of Extenics. Among them, base-element theory uses matter-element, affair-element and relation-element to describe the objects of study. Extension set theory is a creation after the Cantor set and fuzzy set. It expands the distance concept in real variable function, introduces dependent function tools to describe qualitative change of objective things, and provides a quantitative means to express the transformation of contradictory problems. Extension logic is the scientific integration of dialectical logic and formal logic.
This project provides basic theory and basic methods to computers to help people process contradictory problems in engineering field. At present, it has already had a preliminary application in control and detection, artificial intelligence and computer science, economics and management and other fields, which indicates that the methods of Extenics will have a broad application prospects in engineering field.
In the area of artificial intelligence, the project established a new model to describe information and knowledge, and provided a workable method for the strategy generation.
To sum up, after more than 20 years of continuous research, Professor Cai Wen and other researchers have established new disciplines across philosophy, mathematics and engineering – Extenics. It is an original subject established by Chinese scientists, and will have far-reaching value.
