The topic of the project was selected by the first completed person that finished in 1976.? He then published his first paper in 1983, which proclaimed the foundation of the new subject Extenics.
Since 1988, the National Natural Science Foundation of China has supported this research with 6 projects as follows:

The Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation also supported the research with a project named The Conjugate Analysis and Extension Resource Research for Enterprise Resource(010049).
As the integration of more than 20 years’ research achievements, this project engages in studies as follows:
Using formal language to describe matters, affairs and relations,
Building formal model,
Research rules and logic of the resolution of contradictory problems,
Build a set of operable methods and provide basic theory and method for computer to solve contradictory problems in different fields.
Contradictory problems are the research object of this project. It studies rules and methods to deal with the problems. The project has built the Extension Analysis Theory on base-element, the quantitative tool—extension set and dependent function, which support the conjugate analysis theories of matter and the expression of things’ quantitative change and qualitative change, extension logic--the combination of formal logic and dialectical logic. The basic-element theory, the extension set theory and the extension logic are the three pillars of Extension Theory. Based on this theory, we found out operable extension methods, on which we can form extension engineering methods to solve contradictory problems of different fields, based on the professional knowledge of each field.
The creativity of this project lied in three aspects. Firstly, it builds the formal models of Extenics that can be used to transfer and infer and generate the strategy to solve problems, which is different from the way of former scholars using natural language to study contradictory problems. Secondly, it extends the classic set and the fuzzy set to build the extension set and dependent functions, which describe the quantitative and qualitative changes quantitatively. Last but not least, it builds the Extension Logic to deal with contradictory problems. This project is an original and innovative research, leading and guiding the same kind researches at home and aboard.
At present, many scholars from different fields have applied the research results of this project to their own professional areas to solve related problems and gain a lot of achievements. Scholars from overseas also come to learn the achievements of this project and then introduce it to their own countries. Extenics has already developed from theoretical research to practical applications with wide prospects.
